According to Harvard professor <strong>Latanya Sweeney<\/strong>, that happens more often than we think and may expose society\u2019s racial bias.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prof Sweeney\u2019<\/strong>s investigation suggests that names linked with Black people \u2013 as defined by a previous study into racial discrimination in the workplace \u2013 were 25% more likely to have results that prompted the searcher to click on a link to search criminal record history.<\/p>\n<p>She found that names like <strong>Leroy<\/strong>,<strong> Kareem<\/strong> and <strong>Keisha<\/strong> would yield advertisements that read \u201cArrested?\u201d, with a link to a website which could perform criminal record checks.<\/p>\n<p>Searches for names such as <strong>Brad<\/strong>, <strong>Luke<\/strong> and<strong> Katie<\/strong> would not \u2013 instead more likely to offer websites that can provide general contact details.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is discrimination in the delivery of these ads,\u201d concluded <strong>Prof Sweeney<\/strong>, adding that there was a less than 1% chance that the findings could be based on chance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever wondered why when you search for Black-related news using Google, several ads selling access to criminal history and arrest records pop up?
