{"id":19359,"date":"2013-01-31T15:17:10","date_gmt":"2013-01-31T20:17:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=19359"},"modified":"2013-01-31T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2013-01-31T20:17:10","slug":"gun-buy-back-set-for-saturday-in-5-locations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=19359","title":{"rendered":"Gun Buy Back Set For Saturday In 5 Locations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office initiative to get guns off the street, \u201cOperation Gun Swap,\u201d will begin Saturday at 9 a. m. and end at 2 p. m.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who wants to exchange a firearm for cash and a Tampa Bay \u201cFan Pack,\u201d will have a choice of 5 locations. Those locations are:<\/p>\n<p><strong> Sheriff\u2019s Operations Center, 2003 East 8<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong>13501 North Nebraska Avenue (site of closed Sunoco Gas Station).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> IGA Grocery Store, 14720 East Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Sheriff\u2019s Town \u2018N Country Substation, 7519 West Waters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Sheriff\u2019s Progress Village Substation, 7935 Flower Avenue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rules of the gun swap are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Any firearm will be accepted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Each firearm will earn you $75 and a Tampa Bay Fan Pack with ticket vouchers for a Lightning and Rays game\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Firearms must arrive unloaded<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Transport in your vehicle\u2019s trunk, or place securely in a box or bag<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do not remove firearms from your vehicle. A deputy will take possession of the firearm upon your arrival at the collection location<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Unwanted ammunition will be accepted but cannot be exchanged for cash<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>No BB Guns, pellet guns or paint ball guns (but will be accepted for destruction)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>All firearms and ammunition collected will be destroyed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Spokesperson, <strong>Capt. Chad Chronister<\/strong>, said it\u2019s normal to see if any weapon turned in has been used in an offense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may be stolen, and in that case it can be returned to its owner. There are a lot of benefits to collecting he guns, and we want people to understand they do this anonymously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContrary to popular belief, this isn\u2019t a crime reduction method, because we don\u2019t expect criminals to arrive and turn in their weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capt. Chronister<\/strong> said they expect the Gun Swap to be an overwhelming success, and they believe there are people out there who just don\u2019t want to have anything to do with guns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough this isn\u2019t crime reduction related, we still understand gun violence is rising, and removing guns that aren\u2019t wanted can play a role in reducing that violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve received calls from people who had guns left to them in wills or by dead relatives, and they don\u2019t want them. One man said a relative had left him 44 guns, and he didn\u2019t want any of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Capt. Chronister<\/strong> said when a surrendered weapon is found to have played a role in an ongoing investigation, it\u2019s a plus for the detectives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we discover will have no bearing on the person turning the gun in, because the way the system is set up, no one has to identify themselves, or show any identification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pictured:\u00a0<\/strong><strong>On January 14<sup>th<\/sup>, detectives concluded a month-long investigation when they raided a consignment store across the street from Gibsonton Elementary School, and recovered these weapons.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office initiative to get guns off the street, \u201cOperation Gun Swap,\u201d will begin Saturday at 9 a. m. and end at 2 p. m.
