Tampa Police Homicide detectives are investigating the murder of a man at a Drew Park club.<\/p>\n
According to police, at 2:52 a. m. Monday, two men were shot during a disturbance at Flash Dancers, 4202 West Cayuga Street.<\/p>\n
Police said Cornelius Dix<\/strong>, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a second man, Jose Ortiz<\/strong>, 20, was hospitalized in serious condition.<\/p>\n Detectives have not released any suspect information or motive in the shooting, and are still actively investigating the incident.<\/p>\n Mary Dix<\/strong>, the victim\u2019s mother, and Peggy Broadnax<\/strong>, the victim\u2019s aunt, said they preached to Cornelius<\/strong> all the time about how dangerous it is going out these days.<\/p>\n \u201cWe told him Saturday night, and now this,\u201d said Ms. Broadnax<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cCornelius<\/strong> was really trying to get his life back together. That\u2019s what he cared about more than anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Cornelius Dix<\/strong> has two siblings, and was the youngest son of Dwight<\/strong> and Mary Dix<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe were always concerned about some of the places he\u2019d go to sometimes,\u201d said Ms. Broadnax<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cHis mother was always worried about the company he kept, especially when it was someone who wasn\u2019t Black. But when you\u2019re young, they don\u2019t listen.\u201d<\/p>\n Mrs. Dix<\/strong> said her son loved cookouts, because that gave him the opportunity to do what he loved the most, and that\u2019s being around his family.<\/p>\n \u201cI hear all the time what happens to our young men, and they are becoming an endangered species.\u201d<\/p>\n Mrs. Dix<\/strong> said Cornelius <\/strong>left the house with a Hispanic guy who would sometimes call her momma, and it wasn\u2019t the guy who was shot with him.<\/p>\n \u201cAs far as we know, Ortiz <\/strong>or the guy he left here with might have been the target. The guy he left the house with could have called to tell us what happened, instead of\u00a0 me getting a call at work. We still haven\u2019t heard from him.\u201d<\/p>\n Mrs. Dix<\/strong> said they want to know exactly what happened that cost Cornelius <\/strong>his life.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a time when I\u2019m glad we\u2019re a close family, and can draw together for strength,\u201d said Ms. Broadnax<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll also bet anyone this had something to do with an incident that wasn\u2019t worth taking someone\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n Harmon\u2019s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements at this time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Tampa Police Homicide detectives are investigating the murder of a man at a Drew Park club.
