{"id":17403,"date":"2012-10-11T16:08:28","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T20:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=17403"},"modified":"2012-10-11T16:08:28","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T20:08:28","slug":"103-year-old-registers-to-vote-just-before-deadline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=17403","title":{"rendered":"103-Year-Old Registers To Vote Just Before Deadline"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BY TAMECA JOHNSON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Freelance Writer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Get Out The Vote campaign is hard and fierce across the country.\u00a0 Politicians are pushing it.\u00a0 Civil Right leaders are pushing it and even television news personalities, who are supposed to remain unbiased, are pushing the importance of casting a vote this election year.<\/p>\n<p>Some people will listen, but for those who won\u2019t, maybe the story of <strong>Mrs. Carrie Blount Williams<\/strong> will light a fire under you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Williams<\/strong> is a feisty and spry 103-year- old, born in Eleck, Alabama in the year 1909.\u00a0 She became a registered voter in the late 1920s and has voted in every election since the years of <strong>President Calvin Coolidge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Williams<\/strong> moved to Tampa from Los Angeles nearly a year ago, but was determined not to let a move clear across the country prevent her from voting in the upcoming Presidential race.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve always voted,\u201d she says, \u201cand I definitely wanted to vote this time.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to miss it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the help of her 71- year-old nephew, <strong>Willie Lovejoy<\/strong> and family <strong>Attorney Jeraldine Williams-Shaw, Mrs.<\/strong> <strong>Williams<\/strong> registered as a Florida voter late Tuesday afternoon, just in the nick of time.\u00a0 That day was the deadline to register in order to be eligible to vote in the November General Election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe watches all politics,\u201d says <strong>Mr. Lovejoy.<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cAll she does is watch CNN, and she loves <strong>President Obama.<\/strong>\u00a0 She never thought she\u2019d see a Black President in all her life.\u00a0 I\u2019m almost 40 years younger and I never thought I\u2019d see it either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Williams<\/strong> was the third child in a family of 12 children.\u00a0 She never had any kids of her own, but helped raise <strong>Mr.<\/strong> <strong>Lovejoy.<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s outlived three husbands and all but one sibling.\u00a0 She lived on her own in California prior to her move to Tampa.\u00a0 She\u2019s a member of Bible-Based Fellowship Church in Temple Terrace and according to her nephew, actively participates in the church\u2019s senior activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe gets around very well.\u00a0 Don\u2019t take her shopping, \u2018cause she\u2019ll wear you out!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Lovejoy<\/strong> and <strong>State Representative Betty Reed<\/strong> will personally escort <strong>Mrs.<\/strong> <strong>Williams <\/strong>to the polls on Election Day November 6.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BY TAMECA JOHNSON Freelance Writer The Get Out The Vote campaign is hard and fierce across the country.\u00a0 Politicians are pushing it.\u00a0 Civil Right leaders are pushing it and even television news personalities, who are supposed to remain unbiased, are pushing the importance of casting a vote this election year.
