{"id":17392,"date":"2012-10-11T15:52:43","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T19:52:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=17392"},"modified":"2012-10-11T16:13:41","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T20:13:41","slug":"misinterpretation-lands-squatter-duo-in-jail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=17392","title":{"rendered":"Misinter- pretation Lands Squatter  Duo In Jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About 6 months ago, Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s detectives rounded up a group of people who had allegedly seized homes in the area under the state\u2019s Adverse Possession law.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the homes had been burglarized and the locks changed, and in at least one case, a home had been seized under adverse possession, then put up for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Last Sunday, deputies arrested two women they say were squatters who were using the adverse possession law in a scam to take over ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samantha Margas (pictured)<\/strong>, 39, and <strong>Tami Robinson<\/strong>, 43, were charged with two counts of invasion by false personation, organized fraud, burglary, and grand theft. Their bails were set at $69,500 each.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_17408\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Tami-Robinson.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17408\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-17408\" src=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Tami-Robinson-150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-17408\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tami Robinson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Deputies were called to the 11,000 block of Laurel Brook Court on September 26<sup>th<\/sup>. The homeowner reported that strangers were living in his house.<\/p>\n<p>That homeowner had left the home vacant due to a problem with the drywall. When he returned, <strong>Robinson <\/strong>had moved in, detectives reported.<\/p>\n<p>Last Sunday night, deputies were called to a home on Crestlake in Riverview and found <strong>Margas<\/strong>, who said she had just moved into the home. She reportedly told deputies she had not purchased the home and wasn\u2019t paying rent. She also allegedly reported that <strong>Robinson<\/strong> was filing for adverse possession, and she had a locksmith change the locks on the house.<\/p>\n<p>In that case, the homeowner was serving at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, and had closed up the house before leaving town.<\/p>\n<p>Deputies said what has been happening is someone breaks into an unoccupied house and then files paperwork with the court in hopes of using adverse possession to assume ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Under Florida statutes, people can ask a judge to award them title of the property if they fix it up and occupy it for seven years while paying the taxes.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson, <strong>Debbie Carter,<\/strong> said in some cases, the paperwork doesn\u2019t catch up with the process of actually taking over ownership of the houses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these days of so many abandoned and foreclosed homes, people are finding these houses, and claiming adverse possession.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>About 6 months ago, Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s detectives rounded up a group of people who had allegedly seized homes in the area under the state\u2019s Adverse Possession law.
