{"id":14300,"date":"2012-05-03T16:39:44","date_gmt":"2012-05-03T20:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=14300"},"modified":"2012-05-03T16:39:44","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T20:39:44","slug":"aunt-of-slain-infant-said-there-was-history-of-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=14300","title":{"rendered":"Aunt Of Slain Infant Said There Was History Of Abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Elethea Dampier<\/strong> said her adopted daughter, <strong>Chekayla Dampier<\/strong>, was not ready to have a baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was involved in a relationship with a married man, and she probably thought by getting pregnant, that would keep them together,\u201d said <strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong> said she thinks it was the rejection by her boyfriend that caused <strong>Chekayla<\/strong> to take her frustrations out on her infant son, <strong>Emilio Bautista<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chekayla<\/strong> is in jail for holding 7-week-old <strong>Emilio<\/strong> under a faucet of hot water, and leaving him with severe burns covering his body. <strong>Emilio<\/strong> died Sunday from his injuries at Tampa General Hospital\u2019s Burn Unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong> gave some insight on why this incident happened, and some history on <strong>Chekayla<\/strong> and <strong>Emilio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew she didn\u2019t have transportation, and the baby might be neglected. She was abused by her mother when she was small, so we adopted her and her older sister, who died of Lupus last year at the age of 20.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>Chekayla<\/strong> would run away a lot and enjoyed hanging out. She told us she didn\u2019t like school and wasn\u2019t going. We tried so hard to help her and urged her to take care of the baby. She just wasn\u2019t ready to be a mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong> said she wishes <strong>Chekayla<\/strong> would have called them and asked for help before hurting the baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just found out that the baby had been abused for a long time before this happened. I tried to get the Department of Children and Families involved, but they kept coming up with excuses for not doing their job. DCF had a week to get that baby away from<strong> Chekayla<\/strong>, and dropped the ball. I called them and told them what was going on before this incident happened, and they still did nothing.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong> said she will be looking getting help to investigate DCF\u2019s actions, because she\u2019s not going to be satisfied until she knows for a fact they did try to help <strong>Emilio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Pasco County Sheriff\u2019s Office spokesperson, <strong>Kevin Doll,<\/strong> said because the case involving <strong>Chekayla Dampier<\/strong> is ongoing, they cannot comment at this time on any issue regarding an abuse investigation by the Pasco County Department of Children and Families, or the finds by their Child Protection Investigator.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of <strong>Emilio\u2019s<\/strong> death, the family had no funds for a funeral service, and are asking for help with expenses. <strong>Ms. Dampier<\/strong> said all they want is a closed viewing and a small service.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who wants to make a donation for <strong>Emilio Bautista<\/strong> should call Doby Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs at (727) 942-0515.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mother Charged With Murder<\/strong><br \/>\nOn Wednesday, the Pasco County Sheriff\u2019s Office announced that <strong>Chekayla Dampier<\/strong>, 18, was officially charged with second degree murder in the death of her 7-week-old son, <strong>Emilio Bautista<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elethea Dampier said her adopted daughter, Chekayla Dampier, was not ready to have a baby. \u201cShe was involved in a relationship with a married man, and she probably thought by getting pregnant, that would keep them together,\u201d said Ms. Dampier.
