{"id":14228,"date":"2012-04-30T15:28:59","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T19:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=14228"},"modified":"2012-04-30T15:28:59","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T19:28:59","slug":"black-hockey-player-says-race-issue-will-always-be-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=14228","title":{"rendered":"Black Hockey Player Says Race Issue Will Always Be There"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARLINGTON, Va. \u2014 Washington Capitals players tapped the ice with sticks when <strong>Joel Ward<\/strong> skated onto the rink for practice last Friday, and some fans rose for a standing ovation in support of the player whose series-winning goal was greeted with a racial outburst on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>The 31-year-old left wing, one of a handful of black players in the NHL, was the target of numerous degrading tweets after he scored in overtime of Game 7 on Wednesday to end the first-round series against the 2011 champion, Boston Bruins.<\/p>\n<p>The hockey community has rallied around <strong>Ward<\/strong>. Both the Bruins and the NHL quickly condemned the tweets, as did Capitals owner <strong>Ted Leonsis<\/strong>, who wrote on his blog: \u201cShame on these folks who decided to take to their keyboards and show their ignorance and their racism and hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of support from everybody, especially my teammates and the whole organization and the Bruins, and some of their fans,\u201d <strong>Ward<\/strong> said. \u201cI was blown away by the amount of people and the amount of support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is irony in this OT game winning goal coming against Boston and the reaction from Bruins \u201cfans.\u201d <strong>Ward<\/strong> scored the goal against <strong>Tim Thomas<\/strong>, the goaltender who refused to attend the White House celebration of the Bruins\u2019 championship because of his disdain of <strong>President Obama<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ARLINGTON, Va. \u2014 Washington Capitals players tapped the ice with sticks when Joel Ward skated onto the rink for practice last Friday, and some fans rose for a standing ovation in support of the player whose series-winning goal was greeted with a racial outburst on Twitter.
