{"id":13589,"date":"2012-03-26T16:27:33","date_gmt":"2012-03-26T20:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=13589"},"modified":"2012-03-26T16:27:33","modified_gmt":"2012-03-26T20:27:33","slug":"miami-heat-players-don-hoodies-for-trayvon-martin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=13589","title":{"rendered":"Miami Heat Players  Don Hoodies For Trayvon Martin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI \u2014 <strong>Dwyane Wade<\/strong> and <strong>LeBron James<\/strong> were only a few miles away from <strong>Trayvon Martin<\/strong> on Feb. 26, participating in the NBA All-Star game on the night the unarmed black teenager wearing a hooded sweatshirt was shot to death by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>They never knew the teenager, but on Friday they decided it was time to speak out \u2013 as did many others around the NBA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wade<\/strong> posted a photo of himself from a previous photo shoot wearing a hooded shirt, otherwise known as a hoodie, to his Twitter and Facebook pages on Friday morning.<\/p>\n<p>A couple hours later,<strong> James<\/strong> posted another photo \u2013 this one of 13 Heat players, all wearing team-logo hoodies, their heads bowed, their hands stuffed into their pockets. The photo was taken at the team hotel, and Heat coach <strong>Erik Spoelstra<\/strong> called it \u201ca powerful statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a father, this hits home,\u201d said <strong>Wade<\/strong>, who has 10- and 4-year-old sons.<\/p>\n<p>Among the hashtags <strong>James<\/strong> linked to the team photo: \u201cWeWantJustice.\u201d The National Basketball Players Association issued a statement saying it was saddened and horrified by the killing, demanded an arrest and accused the police department in Sanford, Fla. \u2013 where Martin was shot \u2013 of \u201cracial bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really is a tragic story,\u201d<strong> Spoelstra<\/strong> said. \u201cAnd the more you learn about it, the more confused you get.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MIAMI \u2014 Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were only a few miles away from Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, participating in the NBA All-Star game on the night the unarmed black teenager wearing a hooded sweatshirt was shot to death by a neighborhood crime-watch volunteer.
