Former Pro Bowl tight end\u00a0Darren Waller<\/a>\u00a0has retired from the NFL at 31 years old after a single season with the\u00a0New York Giants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Waller informed the Giants<\/a>\u00a0of his decision prior to the start of their minicamp, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. The Giants confirmed his retirement in a statement Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe have great respect for Darren as a person and player,”\u00a0the statement reads<\/a>. “We wish him nothing but the best.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

New York’s mandatory minicamp starts Tuesday. The\u00a0Giants traded a third-round draft pick to acquire Waller<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>\u00a0prior to last season.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Waller addressed his decision in a YouTube video released Sunday afternoon. He mentioned his recent divorce from WNBA All-Star Kelsey Plum and described a frightening medical situation off the field last season that “forced me into a position to re-evaluate.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
