At just 25 years old, Deas, a Haitian UF Levin\u00a0College<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Law<\/a>\u00a0student, has shattered\u00a0barriers<\/a>\u00a0and made\u00a0waves<\/a>\u00a0in her\u00a0career<\/a>\u00a0path, marking a significant\u00a0milestone<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0representation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0diversity<\/a>\u00a0within the university\u2019s legal system.<\/p>\n

Deas, a native Floridian who hails from\u00a0Miami<\/a>\u00a0and currently resides in Gainesville, received the\u00a0groundbreaking<\/a>\u00a0news<\/a>\u00a0via email, sparking a moment of\u00a0joy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0accomplishment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0announcement<\/a>, made on Jan. 31,\u00a02024<\/a>, coincided with the onset of\u00a0Black<\/a>\u00a0History<\/a>\u00a0Month, adding a deeper layer of significance to her\u00a0achievement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the importance of\u00a0Black history<\/a>\u00a0and representation, Deas emphasized that her appointment serves as a testament to the\u00a0enduring legacy<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0African Americans<\/a>\u00a0and their\u00a0contributions<\/a>\u00a0to American\u00a0society<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack history is American history,\u201d<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0she remarked, underscoring the need for ongoing\u00a0<\/em>recognition<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>celebration<\/em><\/a>\u00a0of Black\u00a0<\/em>achievements<\/em><\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Having joined the UF Supreme\u00a0Court<\/a>\u00a0as an associate justice in Spring\u00a02023<\/a>, Deas set her sights on the role of chief justice, a goal she realized in a remarkably short period.
