LOS ANGELES \u2014 Love triumphed over action at the weekend box office with a No. 1 debut for the romantic drama “The Vow.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Studio Sunday show that the love story starring Rachel McAdams<\/strong> and Channing Tatum<\/strong> took in $41.7 million to come in ahead of two new action tales and the first 3-D “Star Wars<\/em>” reissue.<\/p>\n

Landing a close second with $39.3 million was Denzel Washington<\/strong> and Ryan Reynolds’<\/strong> action thriller “Safe House.”<\/em> Coming in solidly at No. 3 was Dwayne Johnson’s<\/strong> family action sequel “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island”<\/em> with $27.6 million.<\/p>\n

And adding to George Lucas<\/strong>‘ riches was the 3-D premiere of “Star Wars: Episode I \u2013 The Phantom Menace,”<\/em> which was No. 4 with $23 million. That raises the lifetime domestic total for “Phantom Menace”<\/em> to $454.1 million.<\/p>\n

1. “The Vow,”<\/em> $41.7 million ($9.7 million international).
\n2. “Safe House,”<\/em> $39.3 million ($10.2 million international).
\n3. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,”<\/em> $27.6 million ($25.5 million international).
\n4. “Star Wars: Episode I \u2013 The Phantom Menace”<\/em> in 3-D, $23 million ($20.5 million international).
\n5. “Chronicle,”<\/em> $12.3 million.
\n6. “The Woman in Black,”<\/em> $10.3 million.
\n7. “The Grey,”<\/em> $5.1 million.
\n8. “Big Miracle,”<\/em> $3.9 million ($400,000 international).
\n9. “The Descendants,”<\/em> $3.5 million.
