However,<strong> Sabrina Broxton<\/strong> became the first African American homicide of 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a month-by-month recap of the murders of African Americans in Tampa and Hillsborough County.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 23 murders of African Americans in 2011 attributed to violence, 15 of the cases were solved with the arrest of the person or persons responsible.<\/p>\n<p>Overall in Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa, there were 35 homicides.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JANUARY 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On January 12, 2011, Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s deputies arrested <strong>William Henry Sanders<\/strong> for the 2001 murder of <strong>Sabrina Hayes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>APRIL 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SABRINA BROXTON (Pictured, right)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On April 3, 2011, <strong>Sabrina Broxton<\/strong> became the first African American homicide victim of the year.<br \/>\n<strong>Broxton<\/strong> 24, was standing in front of a house in Carver City when she intervened in a dispute between her boyfriend and<strong> Antonio King<\/strong>. Police said <strong>King<\/strong> and <strong>Broxton<\/strong> started fighting, the fight was broken up, and <strong>King<\/strong> went into his house, returned with a handgun, and fired into a crowd of people, striking <strong>Broxton<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>King<\/strong> was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12112\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Courtney-Yates.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12112\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-12112\" src=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Courtney-Yates-150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12112\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Courtney Yates<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On April 9, 2011, <strong>Courtney Yates<\/strong>, 32, begged for his life before <strong>Jontavis Williams<\/strong>, 23, shot him three times.<br \/>\n<strong>Williams<\/strong> turned himself in for the shooting and was charged with first-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p>On April 13, 2011, <strong>Nakysha Hamilton<\/strong>, 23, and her boyfriend, <strong>Leon Stevenson, Jr.<\/strong>, were arguing over bills when <strong>Stevenson<\/strong> reportedly struck <strong>Hamilton<\/strong> and threw her to the floor. <strong>Stevenson<\/strong> later told police he woke up later and notice <strong>Hamilton<\/strong> was not moving and gasping for air. He put her in his car, drove to her mother\u2019s house, and left her outside where she was found dead.<br \/>\nPolice charged<strong> Stevenson<\/strong> with second-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAY 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On May 8th, <strong>Walter \u201cJJ\u201d Revear<\/strong> was shot to death as he tried to break up a fight at the Interstate Lounge.<br \/>\n<strong>Revear<\/strong>, 28, was at the lounge with his sister and other family members and friends when the shooting occurred.<br \/>\n<strong>Jimmy Lee Cruz<\/strong>, 33, was later arrested and charged in the shooting.<\/p>\n<p>On May 18th, <strong>Damarcus Kirklalnd-Williams<\/strong>, 21, was charged with the death of 13-month-old <strong>Ezekiel Mathis<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>Kirkland-Williams<\/strong> told police he was angry with the child\u2019s mother and intended to throw the toddler onto the bed. However, the child\u2019s stomach struck a dresser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JUNE 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On June 1st, <strong>Charles Daniels, Jr.<\/strong>, 39, was found shot to death in the driveway of his home.<br \/>\n<strong>Daniels<\/strong> was the father of four children. No arrests have been made in his murder.<\/p>\n<p>During the early morning hours of June 5th, <strong>Kiara Brito<\/strong>, 16, and her brother, <strong>Jeremi Brito<\/strong>, 13, were shot to death in their South Tampa home during a home invasion.<br \/>\n<strong>Charles Waits<\/strong>, 19, and <strong>Tavari Grant<\/strong>, 18, were charged with first-degree murder in the shootings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JULY 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12113\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Nicole-Rene-Williams-.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12113\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-12113\" src=\"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Nicole-Rene-Williams--150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nicole Rene Williams<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the 4th of July, <strong>Egan Fernando Atkins<\/strong> was charged with stabbing his ex-wife to death, <strong>Nicole Rene Williams<\/strong>, as she slept.<br \/>\nPolice said <strong>Atkins<\/strong> broke into the home through a window, armed himself with a kitchen knife, and stabbed <strong>Williams<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On July 9th, police arrested <strong>Ayana Brown<\/strong>, 21, and charged her with the murder of <strong>James \u201cPops\u201d Frazier<\/strong>, 83.<br \/>\n<strong>Frazier<\/strong> was found dead in a room at the Haven Motel on Nebraska Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>On July 30th, <strong>Iesha Washington<\/strong>, 18, and <strong>Craig Thompson<\/strong>, 22 were shot to death as they were attending a party.<br \/>\nThe Sheriff\u2019s Office reported that a fight broke out during the party, and bullets starting flying.<br \/>\n<strong>Tyrell Bragg<\/strong>, 21 was charged with the murder of <strong>Washington<\/strong>. No arrest has been made in the shooting death of <strong>Thompson<\/strong>.<strong>[private]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEPTEMBER 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, September 19th, it was announced that <strong>Ms. Tina Toney Lark<\/strong>, 44, and a day care operator, had been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child.<br \/>\nPolice said the parents of <strong>De\u2019Arron Deshazier<\/strong> left him in the care of<strong> Ms. Lark<\/strong> at her home daycare on August 1st.<br \/>\nThe Hillsborough County Sheriff\u2019s Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a child being unresponsive and not breathing. The child was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OCTOBER 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On October 2nd, Club Empire in Ybor City was closing and patrons were leaving when an unknown gunman fatally shot <strong>Leslie Jerome Jones, Jr<\/strong>., 20, and wounded <strong>Ahmaud Black<\/strong>, 19.<br \/>\nThe shootings caused an outrage among the citizens of Tampa who picketed in front of the club, demanding it be shut down.<br \/>\nThe owner of the club did permanently close the club a few weeks later, saying attendance had fallen off.<br \/>\nNo arrests have been made in the shootings.<\/p>\n<p>On October 12th, the owner of Sam\u2019s Food Mart went into the store and found his clerk and sister-in-law, <strong>Marilyn Tejada<\/strong>, 53, on the floor with a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead the next day.<br \/>\nNo arrests have been made in her shooting.<\/p>\n<p>On October 29th, <strong>John Singleton, Jr<\/strong>. and a friend went to a birthday party at the Unique Island Grill on 34th Street and Lake Avenue.<br \/>\nTampa Police said there were about 60 people inside the building for the party when a fight started. Several people were ejected from the party, but police said the fight continued outside.<br \/>\nWhen <strong>Singleton<\/strong> went outside where the fight was occurring, he was shot. The 17-year-old Tampa Bay Vo-Tech junior died later at a local hospital.<br \/>\nNo arrests have been made in the shooting at this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOVEMBER 2011<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On November 6th,<strong> Jamarie Lavon Hodges<\/strong>,16, left the comfort of his home on East Ellicott Street, and went outside to help a friend who was involved in a fight.<br \/>\nPolice said as <strong>Hodges<\/strong> was trying to help his friend, someone fired several shots from a handgun, killing him.<br \/>\nPolice later arrested <strong>Jose Torres-Melvin<\/strong>, 19, on a charge of first-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p>On November 9th, Tampa Police got a call of a domestic dispute in the 300 block of East Woodlawn.<br \/>\nWhen officers arrived, they found <strong>Charon Shaw<\/strong>, 39, shot. He was transported to a local hospital with nine gunshot wounds, and was pronounced dead.<br \/>\nPolice said <strong>Damien Townes<\/strong> fired the fatal shots, and he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.<br \/>\nAccording to reports, <strong>Leah Waring<\/strong> called 9-1-1 to report that she and <strong>Shaw<\/strong> were involved in a domestic incident. <strong>Waring<\/strong> told police <strong>Shaw<\/strong> was her former boyfriend.\u00a0 <strong>Townes<\/strong> was identified as <strong>Waring\u2019s<\/strong> current boyfriend.<\/p>\n<p>On November 12th, Plant City Police arrested 18-year-old <strong>Abel C. Dimas<\/strong> and charged him with the murder of 51-year-old <strong>Laronia Bowers<\/strong>, and the attempted murder of 59-year-old <strong>Edward Mincey<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>Dimas<\/strong> was arrested during a traffic stop, and police said he was the passenger inside of a vehicle that matched an SUV seen leaving the area after the shootings. Police also arrested <strong>Javier Castillo<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLater that same evening, Plant City Police were called to 506 East Ohio Street. When they arrived, they entered the residence and found the bodies of a man and woman who appeared to have suffered fatal injuries.<br \/>\nThe victims were later identified as <strong>Faye Kitchen<\/strong>, 50, and <strong>Shannon Thomas<\/strong>, 33.
