{"id":11307,"date":"2011-11-10T15:54:14","date_gmt":"2011-11-10T20:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=11307"},"modified":"2011-11-10T15:54:34","modified_gmt":"2011-11-10T20:54:34","slug":"community-activist-loses-battle-with-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=11307","title":{"rendered":"Com- munity Activist Loses Battle With Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A popular community activist for East Tampa has lost her battle with cancer. <strong>Mrs. Betty Wiggins<\/strong> was 78 years old.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> had semi retired from activism and told this reporter on many occasions, \u201cIt\u2019s time for you young people to take over and learn how to do things. I\u2019m getting older, now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several months ago, this reporter contacted <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> just to check on her welfare. It was about that time she informed me that she had something to share with me, but would do so in a future conversation. During the next conversation, she shared the news about the bone cancer diagnosis.<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> had fallen and had gone to the doctor. It was then she learned of the cancer.\u00a0 <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> died on Wednesday evening in the care of hospice. She was living with her daughter,<strong> Mrs. Deborah Brown Randall<\/strong>, at the time of her death.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Monticello, <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> graduated valedictorian from Howard Academy High School at 16. Following graduation, she attended Florida A &amp; M University, where she earned a Bachelor\u2019s Degree in English. She continued her education at the University of Florida, where she earned a Master\u2019s Degree in Education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> served as an educator in the Hillsborough County Public School District from 1957 until 1968. She was employed at the General Electric Pinellas Plant for nearly 17 years, where she became the first African American woman to hold a manager\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> began her leadership roles in the Progress Village community for more than 20 years. After moving into East Tampa, <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> once again became an integral part of the community.<\/p>\n<p>During an 18-year period with the East Tampa Business and Civic Association, <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> served as secretary, president, CEO and Public Relations Director. She also served as an Interim City Council member for a year.<\/p>\n<p>A Life Member and \u201cGolden Soror,\u201d of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,<strong> Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> was the recipient of numerous awards and other forms of recognition.<\/p>\n<p>She launched B. P. Brown Enterprises, Inc., a printing and public relations firms, in 1984, and became the first African American woman in the community to enter and succeed in the field.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her daughter, <strong>Mrs. Wiggins<\/strong> is survived by her son, <strong>Donald A. Brown<\/strong>, grandchildren, siblings, other relatives and friends.<\/p>\n<p>Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 12th, 11 a.m., at Allen Temple A. M. E. Church.
