{"id":11051,"date":"2011-10-31T15:29:30","date_gmt":"2011-10-31T19:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=11051"},"modified":"2011-10-31T15:29:30","modified_gmt":"2011-10-31T19:29:30","slug":"dr-j-denies-memorabilia-auction-tied-to-lawsuit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=11051","title":{"rendered":"Dr. J Denies Memorabilia Auction Tied To Lawsuit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PHILADELPHIA<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>Julius Erving<\/strong> has denied an upcoming auction of his personal basketball memorabilia collection is tied to a lawsuit filed against him by a Georgia bank.<\/p>\n<p>Known on the hardwood as <strong>Dr. J, Erving<\/strong> said on Wednesday he\u2019s never been a \u201choarder or collector,\u201d and plans to donate a portion of the auction proceeds to the Salvation Army.<\/p>\n<p>It has been reported that <strong>Erving<\/strong> owes more than $200,000 on a loan with Georgia Primary Bank, according to a lawsuit filed in Fulton Superior Court.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was reported only hours after SCP Auctions announced that bidding would be open to registered bidders on Friday. Not true, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat irony actually gave me a sleepless night last night,\u201d he said. \u201cI had to laugh at it and cringe at it that these stories would run concurrent with one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 61-year-old<strong> Erving<\/strong> said the auction was part of a long-planned celebration of his career. He said most of his cherished possessions were in storage and that he rarely looked at his collection. He said he occasionally wore his 1983 ring and never his ABA rings. <strong>Erving<\/strong> said he will keep his Hall of Fame ring. His induction into the Hall of Fame came in 1993.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family is 100 percent behind it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe decided to do it a long time ago. To claim it\u2019s a firesale or to clear up some debt, I don\u2019t think so. You don\u2019t do an auction overnight. This has been long planned.
