{"id":10595,"date":"2011-10-13T15:14:49","date_gmt":"2011-10-13T19:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=10595"},"modified":"2011-10-13T14:11:01","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T18:11:01","slug":"man-arrested-in-killing-of-u-s-player-in-romania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=10595","title":{"rendered":"Man Arrested In Killing Of U.S. Player In Romania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>BUCHAREST, ROMANIA<\/strong> \u2014 A man was arrested Monday in the killing of <strong>Chauncey Hardy<\/strong>, a former basketball player at Sacred Heart in Connecticut who prosecutors say was punched in the face by the boyfriend of a woman <strong>Hardy<\/strong> was with in a bar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ionut Adrian Tanasoaia<\/strong> surrendered to police and will be in custody for 29 days while he awaits trial. He is accused of beating up <strong>Hardy<\/strong> in a bar in the southern Romanian city of Giurgiu on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hardy<\/strong> died shortly after surgery Sunday in Bucharest. The 23-year-old player sustained severe head injuries and was in a coma when admitted to the hospital in Giurgiu, where he played for CSS Giurgiu and was celebrating a victory over rival Dinamo Bucharest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hardy<\/strong> was punched after he playfully put his cap on a woman\u2019s head, prosecutors said. They added that the woman\u2019s boyfriend objected to the gesture, and <strong>Hardy<\/strong> tried to show he didn\u2019t understand Romanian.<strong> Tanasoaia<\/strong> then allegedly punched <strong>Hardy<\/strong> on the chin and he fell to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>A preliminary autopsy revealed a massive hemorrhage and broken skull. Giurgiu county hospital spokeswoman <strong>Elisabeta Bene<\/strong> said Monday that doctors initially suspected <strong>Hardy<\/strong> was in a coma because he had been drinking.
