{"id":10228,"date":"2011-09-29T15:12:56","date_gmt":"2011-09-29T19:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=10228"},"modified":"2011-09-29T12:57:51","modified_gmt":"2011-09-29T16:57:51","slug":"nhl-calls-banana-throwing-%e2%80%98stupid-and-ignorant%e2%80%99","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flsentinel.com\/?p=10228","title":{"rendered":"NHL Calls Banana Throwing \u2018Stupid And Ignorant\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>DETROIT<\/strong> \u2014 <strong>Wayne Simmonds<\/strong> should have been able to talk about what a fine first impression he\u2019s made on his new team.<\/p>\n<p>After scoring in the final minute of Philadelphia\u2019s game in London, Ontario, on Thursday night, <strong>Simmonds<\/strong> found the net again in a shootout \u2014 but it was what happened while he was in the process of scoring that second goal that stole all the headlines.<\/p>\n<p>A banana was thrown from the stands as <strong>Simmonds<\/strong> skated toward Detroit goalie<strong> Jordan Pearce<\/strong>, marring the end of an exhibition game that was played about 120 miles from <strong>Simmonds<\/strong>\u2019 birthplace of Scarborough, Ontario. <strong>Simmonds<\/strong>, who is Black, issued a statement Friday, before the Flyers and Red Wings played again in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was unfortunate that this incident happened, but I am above this sort of stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is something that is obviously out of my control. Moving forward, this incident is something that I will no longer comment on so I can just focus on playing for the Philadelphia Flyers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simmonds<\/strong> made the trip with the Flyers to Detroit, but sat out Philadelphia\u2019s 3-1 win over the Red Wings on Friday night, as both teams tried to use players who hadn\u2019t been in the lineup the previous day.<strong> Simmonds<\/strong> was in press row toward the end of the game, and although he declined further comment, he did send a few autograph-seeking fans home happy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Black, and I\u2019m a real big hockey fan,\u201d said 29-year-old <strong>Latoya Pugh<\/strong>, who was at the game with her kids. \u201cIt\u2019s a sport you want to get more Americans into.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DETROIT \u2014 Wayne Simmonds should have been able to talk about what a fine first impression he\u2019s made on his new team.
